Privacy Policy

WhatsUp, run by What’s Up SETX LLC, helps you find things to do near you. This policy explains what we collect when you use whatsup.org and our apps, why, and the choices you have. We keep it short and we don’t sell your personal information.
What we collect
- Your account: your name, email address and password (stored only as a secure hash). If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google, and nothing else from your Google account.
- What you do in WhatsUp: the events you save, the interests you tell us about and, when you’re signed in, the questions you ask in Browse’s search, so we can show you things you’ll like. What your questions tell us about you shows on your Profile under What We Know So Far, where you can delete any of it.
- About you, if you choose: your birthday and gender. Both are optional, they’re never shown to anyone, and certain features require them (Friends needs your birthday). We use them to pick events and rows that fit you, and only ever count them up in totals that never identify anyone (such as how many people aged 25 to 34 use WhatsUp), with groups smaller than 10 people left out. If you’re 18 or older, our usage statistics get your age group and the gender option you chose, never your birthday or the words you write. If you’re under 18, they get neither. You can change or clear these on your Profile. To keep ages honest, birthday changes are limited, and we keep a record of past answers that only we can see.
- Friends, if you use them: who you’re friends with and the friend requests you send and get. Friends need a birthday on file, so we can keep teens safe.
- The waiting list: if you join it, your email address and the city you want to explore.
- Usage and device information: pages you visit, approximate location from your IP address, browser and device type, what you tap and search for, and errors the app runs into, collected through cookies, Google Analytics and PostHog. PostHog may also record how you move through a page so we can fix confusing screens; what you type into forms is hidden from those recordings.
How we use it
- To run your account, sign you in and keep it secure.
- To show and personalize events and places near you.
- To email you about your account, and about WhatsUp updates if you joined the waiting list.
- To understand how WhatsUp is used so we can make it better.
Information from Google
If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture. We use them only to create and run your WhatsUp account, we don’t sell them or use them for advertising, and we delete them when you delete your account. WhatsUp’s use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
When you’re signed out and signed in to Google in your browser, Google may offer to sign you in to WhatsUp with your Google account on some pages. That offer comes from Google, and we receive nothing unless you pick an account. If you’ve signed in with Google here before, it can sign you back in for you; after you log out, it waits until you pick an account again.
What other people see
You have a profile page at a link with your first name and last initial (such as whatsup.org/u/sam-r). It isn’t listed in search engines, and nobody can search WhatsUp for people. Anyone with the link sees your first name and last initial. Your friends see your full name and the events you mark Going, unless you choose Only me on your Profile. Maybe, Into It and Can’t Miss are always just for you, and nobody, friends included, ever sees your birthday, gender, email or the pages you follow.
If you’re under 18, your profile shows nothing to adults who aren’t your friends, adults can’t send you friend requests, and you can ask anyone you choose.
Who we share it with
We don’t sell or rent your personal information. We share it only with the services that help us run WhatsUp, and only for that purpose: Supabase (accounts and database), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email), Google Analytics and PostHog (usage statistics and error reports), Anthropic (to answer questions typed into the search on Browse, without your name or email) and Google (if you choose Sign in with Google). Our maps load from OpenFreeMap, which sees your IP address when your browser fetches a map, but nothing about you or your account. If you tap the microphone in search, your browser turns what you say into text (Chrome sends the recording to Google to do this, Safari to Apple); we only receive the text, and treat it like a typed search. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
Cookies
We use cookies to keep you signed in, to remember how you last signed in, to remember the last few events you opened and the kinds of events you look for (never the words you search) so we can suggest similar ones, and for Google Analytics and PostHog. You can block cookies in your browser, but signing in won’t work without them.
Your choices
- Every email we send has a link to unsubscribe.
- You can delete your account yourself, in the app or on the website: log in, then go to Profile › Account & Security › Delete Account. It’s hidden right away and logged out on every device. 30 days later we permanently delete it with your saved events, the interests and About You answers you gave us, your friends and the pages you follow, and email you that it’s done. Changes you made to a page you help run stay with that page, without your name. Log back in before then to keep your account. If you also joined our email list, that’s separate: unsubscribe from any of those emails to leave it.
- You can ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct it, by emailing hello@whatsup.org.
Keeping it safe
Your information is stored with our providers in the United States and protected in transit with encryption. We keep it while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete it 30 days later, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. Totals you were part of, like how many people saved an event, and analytics records that no longer point to you can stay.
Children
WhatsUp is not meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above, and tell you by email if the change is significant.
